The Communication History Interest Group is dedicated to providing a base for at least three kinds of historical scholarship in communication: the history of communication (including media history), the history of the field of communication, and the history of the idea of communication. More details about the interest group are available [on this site].
We welcome papers, panels, and poster presentations on topics that relate to these broad areas of historical inquiry. The Interest Group reminds potential contributors that ‘history’ is linked to numerous methodological and theoretical approaches to scholarship, and encourages submitters to think broadly about history.
The Interest Group accepts (a) full papers and (b) panel proposals, as well as (c) submissions to a special, extended session (“Innovative Methods Workshop”; see below).
(a) Full papers should be no longer than 30 pages in length, double-spaced. IMPORTANT SUBMISSION NOTE: Extended abstracts will NOT be considered.
(b) Panel proposals should include:
(c) Innovative Methods Workshop: Each ICA division and interest group is programming an ‘extended session’ for Phoenix, designed to run two-and-half-hours and to feature a non-traditional format. The CHIG extended session, ‘Innovative Methods in Communication History: A Workshop,’ will feature three rounds of short presentations (5 to 7 minutes), followed in each round by a 20-minute breakout session. Presenters will provide a brief overview of their methods, including concrete examples. In the breakout sessions, presenters will spread out to assigned stations, where attendees will have the chance to ask questions and, when relevant, to view narrated demonstrations. The purpose of the workshop is to showcase and circulate innovative methods being used by historians of communication. IMPORTANT SUBMISSION NOTE: For the Innovative Methods Workshop only, submit an extended abstract (500-600 words) of the proposed presentation, with clear labeling that the submission is intended for the Workshop. If accepted, you will be expected to make careful logistical arrangements with the Interest Group program planners three months before the convention.
Authors should submit papers, panel proposals, and extended session proposals to the Communication History Interest Group online at the ICA website.
